More often, it starts with a faint squeal at a stop sign, a pedal that feels a little different, or a steering wheel that shakes only when slowing down. Knowing how to spot worn brakes early gives you time to schedule the right repair before a small wear item turns into damaged rotors, reduced stopping power, or an unsafe drive.

Your brakes are a system, not a single part. Pads or shoes create friction, rotors or drums absorb heat, calipers apply pressure, brake fluid transfers that pressure, and the anti-lock braking system helps maintain control during hard stops. Listen for Brake Noises That Do Not Belong
